Intandem Boards Holiday Rom-Com 'Holidater' at AFM

Intandem will release the feature in the U.K. and handle sales worldwide.

Los Angeles- and London-based financing and distribution group Intandem Films has boarded the romantic comedy project Holidater as a co-producer, U.K. distributor and world sales agent.

The script to Holidater was co-written by Christina Huntington and Daniel Maddox of 3 Arts Entertainment.

It's the story of Lucy Morris, a workaholic marketing executive who, to avoid being alone over the holidays, strategically finds a man with a great family on Halloween, dates him through Christmas and breaks up with him on New Year's. But when she starts to fall for her latest target, and his eccentric family, her life is thrown into disarray.

Terri Melkonian of Terrimel Entertainment will produce Holidater together with Gary Smith and Sepideh Haftgoli of Intandem.

The shoot is planned in the spring for a December 2013 release. Casting is underway.

Intandem will release Holidater in the British market and is selling the project worldwide to buyers at AFM.

Intandem raises $10 million for '10 Things'

LONDON -- The U.K.'s Intandem Films has completed the $10 million financing for Gil Junger's ''10 Things I Hate About Life,'' which will start shooting this November in Los Angeles.

The romantic comedy is not a sequel to the 1999 pic ''10 Things I Hate About You,'' starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, which Junger directed but did not write.

''10 Things I Hate About Life,'' written and directed by Junger, is described as a brand new story in a similar spirit, about two people who meet when they are trying to commit suicide in a scenic spot.

It's produced by Andrew Lazar of Mad Chance Prods, alongside Junger and Intandem CEO Gary Smith.

Hayley Atwell, who was originally announced in the lead role, is no longer involved in the film because of scheduling issues. Marcia Ross is currently casting the pic.

Intandem, which is publicly listed on the U.K.'s Alternative Investment Market, has raised $6.5 million from U.K. investors via the Enterprise Investment Scheme, which provides tax relief for start-up capital in new ventures.

It also received $1.75 million from the California Film Commission for shooting on location in L.A. and raised $1.6 million from pre-sales to Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East. The U.K. release will be handled by Intandem's new British distribution arm, headed by former Disney exec Robert Mitchell.

The EIS fund-raising was organized by Ben White of White and Company. White takes an exec producer credit, alongside Intandem's head of production Sepideh Bakhtiari.

This is the first time Intandem has tapped EIS funds.

Smith told Variety that the U.K. government's decision in April to increase the EIS ceiling from 2 million ($3.2 million) to $8 million per project has made the scheme far more useful and attractive for financing commercial movies.

Although the investors and the production company must be British, the cash can be used to make films anywhere in the world. Intandem plans to raise EIS coin for three more American projects by next April.

Intandem Films closing on finance for '10 Things I Hate About Life'

Intandem Films, the Aim-listed sales and distribution firm, is expected to complete its financing for 10 Things I Hate About Life, starring Hayley Atwell, within days.

The film, the sequel to box office hit 10 Things I Hate About You, goes into pre-production next week when preparations will be made to begin shooting.

It is written and directed by Gil Junger, who also made the first film, which starred the late Heath Ledger.

Gary Smith, Intandem chief executive, said financing for the film had been helped by changes made by the Government to the Enterprise Investment Scheme earlier this year. The scheme is designed to help smaller, high-risk companies raise funds by offering a range of tax reliefs to investors.

‘Raising the previous limit of £2million allowed per year to £5 million means it’s worthwhile doing bigger, more commercial films,’ he said.

‘We are making the films that the big studios used  to make. For instance Disney made 10 Things I Hate About You, but now they concentrate on making the blockbusters, leaving room for smaller companies  like us.’

In addition to the help from the EIS, Intandem won backing worth $1.75million (£1.2million) from the California State Lottery and raised a further $1.6million at the Cannes Film Festival.

Intandem is co-producing the film with US producer Andrew Lazar.

Intandem will carry out worldwide sales and distribute the film in Britain.

Shooting begins in Los Angeles in November and it will premiere next year.

Another Intandem film, Grassroots, will be shown at the London Film Festival next month.

Intandem launches U.K. distribution arm (Variety)

Intandem launches U.K. distribution arm

'Grassroots' to be first release of Robert Mitchell-led offshoot

International sales and financing company Intandem Films has become the latest player to enter the U.K.'s crowded theatrical distribution market.

The publicly-quoted outfit has joined forces with former Walt Disney U.K. topper Robert Mitchell to launch Intandem Films Distribution. Its first title will be Stephen Gyllenhaal's comedy "Grassroots," which world preemed at the Seattle Film Festival in June. Intandem has set a U.K. distribution date in October.

Intandem raised £1 million ($1.56 million) via a rights issue on the U.K.'s Alternative Investment Market to launch the distribution arm. Mitchell says further rights issues are likely this year and in early 2013 to fund expansion. "The idea was to raise just enough to get started, and to buy one or two films -- not so much a war chest, as a small war drawer," he said.

He plans to release three to five films in the coming year, rising to 10-15 by the third year of operation.

Mitchell has hired former Disney colleage J.J. Donovan as marketing director, and ex-Fox exec Terry Dove as sales director.

"U.K. distribution is a very good business in its own right, it can be very profitable and exciting, but for Intandem it is also part of the overall package they can offer to producers, helping them to get involved in more projects. It provides added appeal to U.S. producers," Mitchell said.

His model is the U.K.'s long-defunct Palace Pictures -- which pioneered Brit indie distribution in the 1980s, with an ecletic mix of edgy and marketable movies across all genres -- where he learned his trade as a distributor before moving with Palace topper Daniel Battsek to launch Buena Vista's U.K. operations.

Future releases will include projects for which Intandem is currently raising the finance and selling internationally, notably John Henderson's "Catweazle," based on the 1970s kids TV series, and Gil Junger's "10 Things I Hate About Life," a sequel to "10 Things I Hate About You," which Mitchell handled at Disney.

Mitchell says his operation will concentrate solely on theatrical releasing, partnering with other companies to handle DVD and TV sales.

"As long as I can find the right projects, there is a room for a new distributor," Mitchell said. "Cinema is so buoyant in the U.K., up 6% so far this year. My expertise is theatrical, I won't be taking my eye off that, and I hope I can prove to filmmakers and industry that I still know how to release films."

Article on Intandem Films mentions K-11

A fundamental element of Intandem's strategy is to take greater control over the films it represents, and IFD will allow Intandem to exploit huge opportunities in the film distribution business. Intandem has already secured distribution rights for K-11, an American film that has been described as the next One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which is in 'post-production', and Catweazle, a film version of the popular 1970's book and television series.

K-11 to premiere at Cannes?

Intandem Films has said that 2012 has started extremely well for the company.

After its AGM, Gary Smith, the CEO and Chairman, commented: "The film Ecstasy has secured distribution in the UK and will be released in cinemas in April 2012. Ecstasy is the follow-up book to Trainspotting, written by Irvine Welsh, and the film's potential popularity is evidenced by almost 600,000 "Likes" on its Facebook page ahead of its release. The film will be screened to international buyers at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

"Comes a Bright Day has been selected for Competition at the Berlin Film Festival, where the film will be premiered. The UK film stars Imogen Poots, Craig Roberts, Timothy Spall and Kevin McKidd and features original music by Paul McCartney.

"K-11 is in final stages of post production in Los Angeles and is expected to be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012."We have stated clearly that our strategy is to represent at least six major films per annum for international sales and to earn Executive Producer fees for helping to arrange the financing for films. We are very confident of achieving our target for the calendar year of 2012."

How amazing is this news if true. We will keep on it. Exciting!!

Intandem, IFA ink pact

Deal to cover around 20 pix a year

Intandem Films will collaborate with L.A.-based distribution and acquisition company IFA Distribution to sell IFA-financed pics worldwide, excluding North America.

Deal is expected to supply London-based Intandem with around 20 lower-budget thrillers, comedies and faith-based pics a year.

IFA, a joint venture between FUNimation Entertainment and American United Entertainment, will distribute pics in North America.

Pics include the $5 million 3D supernatural thriller "Glimmer," toplining Amy Smart and Shawn Roberts, due to be released in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Additional titles include "Stag," "A True Story," "Path of Souls" and "Construction."
Pics in development include "Misfits," toplining Guy Pearce, and thesp William Fichtner's helming debut, "Cold Brook." AUE chair Robert Rodriguez said, "We expect this to be a longterm arrangement that helps build a strong catalog of features that can be exploited on digital outlets as well as traditional media."

Intandem CEO Gary Smith said, "This deal secures Intandem a source of films to add significantly to our catalog. The company is keen to expand into faith-based films through this relationship, and we expect very strong growth in digital distribution in the future."

Intandem attending the American Film Market (AFM)

Intandem is attending the American Film Market held in Santa Monica, CA USA from 2 - 9 November.

K-11 is included in their catalogue. This could mean that Intandem are looking for distributors.

Good luck to K-11!

Continue reading to the end of the post for more details on the AFM.

Click on the following link to see Intandem's Complete Film Catalogue.

In addition it appears that one of Intandem's movies,"Ecstacy", is being screened.

Background on the AFM:

The business of independent motion picture production and distribution - a truly collaborative process - reaches its peak every year at the American Film Market. Over 8,000 industry leaders converge in Santa Monica for eight days of deal-making, screenings, seminars, networking and parties. Participants come from over 70 countries and include acquisition and development executives, agents, attorneys, directors, distributors, festival directors, financiers, film commissioners, producers, writers, the world’s press all those who provide services to the motion picture industry.

Founded in 1981, the American Film Market (AFM) quickly became the premiere global marketplace where Hollywood’s decision-makers and trendsetters all gather under one roof. Unlike a film festival, the AFM is a marketplace where production and distribution deals are closed. In just eight days, more than $800 million in deals will be sealed — on both completed films and those in every stage of development and production — making AFM the must-attend industry event.

The AFM transforms Santa Monica. The Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel is converted into a busy marketplace. All 21 screens on the Santa Monica Promenade and the surrounding community become AFM screening rooms for the entire eight-day event and nine digital and video screening rooms are added just for the AFM.

Participants may view more than 800 screenings of approximately 400 films - 30 new films every two hours - the majority of them world or U.S. premieres. Titles range from big budget blockbusters that will be released by the major studios in the U.S., to lower budget art and genre films recognized at international film festivals, all destined for theaters and television around the world. With 7,000 attendees, 800 screenings, and seminars programmed by leading industry organizations, the American Film Market continues to be the pivotal destination for independent filmmakers and business people from all over the world.

The American Film Market is produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance, www.ifta-online.org
