Don't mess with a mama bear.

In ABC's new thriller, Marta Walraven (Radha Mitchell) grew up in the world of organized crime in San Francisco, but believed she'd escaped it. But her normal life is turned upside down when her husband and the father of her three children is gunned down in their driveway.

The housewife finds herself moving deeper into the dangerous, dark world she thought she'd left behind. She discovers her husband stole drugs, which she has to pay back to a criminal kingpin named Schiller (Goran Visnjic). And then there's the question of who killed her husband, Evan Walraven.

So, what can you expect from the action-packed premiere episode? Here are five things to know about "Red Widow":

1. The show has a "Twilight" connection!

No, no vampires running around the Pacific Northwest. Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg was the screenwriter behind the entire "Twilight" saga. And just like that franchise, she had to adapt from an original, since "Red Widow" is based on a Dutch series called "Penoza." But where "Twilight" had to be condensed, Rosenberg had to fill out "Penoza."

"I used a lot of the same plotting stepping stones, but I really had to develop all of the secondary characters and their relationships," she told Collider. "What you're building, hopefully, is seven years on the air."

2. Marta will be breaking bad

Rosenberg wanted to write a complex female lead character along the lines of the antiheroes we see on cable. "We've had on cable these male characters who are very flawed and complex: Tony Soprano, Dexter Morgan, Vic Mackey," she told TV critics in January. "We've just begun to have that on cable for women in 'Nurse Jackie' and 'Weeds.'"

But the show Rosenberg most wants to emulate? "Breaking Bad."

"It is the model," she said. "I don't know where the character could go -- she could be as bad as Walter White."

3. But she'll still be a mom.

Marta won't be cooking up meth or murdering anyone. While she discovers a knack for the criminal (maybe it's in the genes), she's still focused on her three kids. "She's dealing with all these mundane, maternal issues," Mitchell explained. Marta engages in the criminal aspect of her life only to protect her kids.

"I think there's something beautiful about that maternal energy and seeing that not as the backup to a male lead. We don't often see mothers as leads."

4. Goran Visnjic was Rosenberg's first choice to play Schiller.

But the "ER" star didn't sign on right away because Schiller appears just briefly in the pilot and he wanted a meatier role for his return to series television. Rosenberg eventually won him over with promises of deeper character development in future episodes.

"It was a lot of belief in what Melissa's going to write afterwards," he said. "And I have to say, from Episode 2 on, it was really fun to do all these things.

"And the character is completely unusual, something I've never done before."

5. Who killed Evan Walraven? We'll find out at the end of Season 1.

The mystery of Evan's death will not drag on forever. "Having learned from 'The Killing,' we are answering the questions of who killed [Evan] and where is the coke," Rosenberg promised. "The question of how Marta is going to get herself out of this is a series-long question."

And don't expect too many more shocking deaths. "By the end of the season, we'll have a satisfying answer to the season, but I'm not giving anybody up," she said. "I'm not killing everyone, and I'm not letting anyone off the hook."

The 2-hour premiere of "Red Widow" airs Sunday, 3/3 at 9 PM on ABC.

Launching with a two-hour premiere on Sunday, March 3 at 9/8c (before settling into its Sundays-at-10 home), Red Widow stars Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill) as Marta Walraven, “a housewife who has been sort of avoiding her criminal upbringing by living the life of a soccer mom,” the actress explains. “She then is suddenly dragged into that world… when her husband is assassinated in relation to a drug incident.”

Because though Marta’s husband paid dearly with his life, that fails to offset his debt with crime lord Nicholae Schiller, played by Goran Visnjic in a role that could not be further from his last series regular gig, as ER‘s Dr. Luka Kovac.

Returning to TV as a formidable international crime boss “was really fun,” Visnjic says. “The character is completely unusual, something I’ve never done before.” When pitched the role, he recalls, “I was thinking it’s going to be a very interesting thing to do.”

Rounding out the cast for Red Widow — which is based on the Dutch series Penoza — are Sterling Beaumon (Lost) as Marta’s son, Jaime Ray Newman (CSI: NY) as her sister Kat, Rade Serbedzija (24) as her father, Clifton Collins Jr. (The Event) as FBI Agent James Ramos, Lee Tergesen (Oz), Luke Goss (Hellboy II), Suleka Mathew (Men in Trees), Wil Traval (All Saints), Erin Moriarty and Jakob Salvati.

Goran Visnjic at the TCA Press Tour for 'Red Widow' (airing March 3, ABC)

The cast and producers of Red Widow were at the Television Critics Association 2013 Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, California on January 10, 2013 and while they didn’t want to give away too many secrets, here are few things they mentioned about the show, themselves, and what fans can look forward to when Red Widow premieres on SUNDAY MARCH 3, 9|8c.

Executive Producer Melissa Rosenberg calls main character Marta Walraven (played by Radha Mitchell) a flawed female character, as all human beings are, that has finally come to network TV (as opposed to cable). You have compassion for her. Rosenberg's experience on Dexter helped her find a way to create a character that makes some questionable moral decisions. Radha Mitchell truly shows the humanity of the character.

The Dutch series on which the show is based, Penoza, is very cable-esque. Rosenberg didn't want to pull back on the storytelling for network. The advantage of doing 8 episodes of a show for midseason is that it gave her the time she needed to write and develop the show the way she wanted. She says she's more proud of this show than any she's done in her career.

Rosenberg made a very conscious choice to move on after Marta's life takes an unexpected turn in the pilot. The shift in the relationships with the other characters in moving forward is where she wanted to focus. She says some people are killed off on the show, but she wants to build characters and relationships that continue on for years. The story is about the lengths Marta will go to in order to protect her family. She won't always make the right choices.

Here's a breakdown on what the cast said about their experiences with the show:

Radha Mitchell says Marta is her dream character to play. She has a complex duality. She's a housewife who has been trying to avoid the criminal life she grew up with by being a soccer mom. Mitchell was attracted to the role because Marta is very human, but finds strength in herself as a mother. She always liked the Nikita character, so she was drawn to her character on the show. Mitchell has never worked at a TV pace and calls it both liberating and frightening

Goran Visnjic, "Nicholae Schiller," loves the suits he gets to wear on the show. He only has one scene in the pilot, but says from Episode 2 onward he found the character to be unlike anything he’s ever done before. Visnjic also dropped the news that he's becoming a U.S. citizen very soon!

Jaime Ray Newman, "Kat Petrova," does yoga, and that's one of the few ways she relates to her character in real life. She says was very surprised at what happened in the story, as was the rest of the cast, and they all had theories as to what happened.

Luke Goss says his character, "Luther," was plucked from a gutter to become an enforcer. He's there to watch over Marta. Luther is a selfless character. Newman says he's like a lovable hit man. The lack of language for his character allowed the story to unfold in a wonderful way.

Wil Traval, who plays "Irwin Petrova," says his character may have delusions of grandeur. There’s no intention for him to be evil or to screw up. His aspirations are pretty grand though, and he'll do whatever it takes to succeed.

Goran Visnijc at the 2013 Winter TCA Tour for 'Red Widow'

Even if you don't know who Melissa Rosenberg is, you've probably seen her work; she's the screenwriter behind all the Twilight movies and was a head writer on Dexter for the first four seasons. Now she's running her own show, Red Widow, as creator and executive producer, and she came to the TCA with the stars of the midseason series, including Radha Mitchell and Goran Visnjic. Mitchell plays the lead character, a mother who is pulled into a crime web after the death of her husband, while Visnjic plays a drug lord pulling the strings. The two talked about their characters and what drew them to the show, while Rosenberg gave other tidbits about the series.

Mitchell describes her main character of Marta as a housewife who's been "avoiding her criminal upbringing by living a life of a soccer mom, [then is] dragged into a world she has been trying to avoid her whole life." Mitchell calls it her dream role, since she sees similarities between Marta and a character she had always been fascinated by: the heroine of La Femme Nikita, "a woman who discovers all these strengths under duress."

Visnjic originally turned down the character of Schiller because he only appears briefly in the pilot, but he reconsidered after he said Rosenberg made "promises about what he would be." It sounds like Visnjic will be a big part of the series, and he assured us that "from episode two on, it's really fun, unusual stuff I've never done before." Another bonus? "I love the suits!"

Anson Mount (who memorably starred in Crossroads as Britney Spears's love interest) plays Radha's husband who gets killed in the pilot, and Rosenberg talked about whether we'll ever see him again. At first things sounded hopeful, because she said once he was cast, "we all loved him" and thought "maybe he should come back." Unfortunately, Mount was sacrificed for the story, ultimately, and Rosenberg decided to stick to the focus of Marta moving forward. "It's about moving forward, and the shift into her relationship with Schiller," Rosenberg said.
