Prison drama set to shoot in L.A. this summer



London-based sales and financing house Intandem Films has pacted with L.A. shingle Libertine Films to handle international sales on edgy drama "K-11."


Directed and written by first-time feature helmer Jules Stewart, the pic is a dark and complex character ensemble set in a special unit of L.A. County's Men's Central Jail dedicated to vulnerable prisoners.


Jules Stewart is the mother of thesp Kristen Stewart, and although press reports have linked the actress with the project, Intandem would not comment, but said casting was now on fast-track.


The indie pic is fully financed and skedded to shoot on location in L.A. this July, and is likely to preem at Berlin next year.


Libertine prexy Tom Wright will produce.


Libertine retains all North American rights for the film, with Intandem's CEO Gary Smith serving as consultant on the negotiations.


Smith said: "Libertine Films has a diverse slate of films and we look forward to developing a long and successful collaboration with them."


Jules Stewart, who is repped by ICM's Joanne Wiles, formed Libertine with Wright after working for many years as a script supervisor.

Kristen Stewart's K-11 Project Delayed Again (Cinema Blend)

Kristen Stewart spent the first 15 years of her life starring in movies made by her mother-- you know, the movies about dance recitals and piano concerts and "Look what I can do!" home stunts. Now that she's a megastar, is she really obligated to keep stepping in front of the camera at her mom's bidding?

Apparently not. Stewart had planned to star for her director mother Jules Mann-Stewart in K-11, but according to Gossip Cop, the planned January shoot has been postponed due both to Stewart's schedule and a few other factors. Stewart will be having a busy enough January as it is, with The Runaways and Welcome to the Rileys both premiering at Sundance. 

K-11 will also star Nikki Reed, who rather unmemorably plays one of the Twilight vampires. In the film both Stewart and Reed will play transsexuals who wind up in the K-11 unit of lockup , where they keep people who wouldn't make it in the general population. Sounds bizarre and maybe intriguing, but only if Stewart manages to escape the vampires long enough to make it.

“K-11” is the baby of Jules Mann-Stewart, writer/director of the film and mother of “Twilight” mega-star, Kristen. The film appeared to be building steam after Variety’s March announcement that the project had finally secured financing. Yet, several recent developments indicate that Stewart will not be starring in the film, as had originally been believed.

For months, IMDB Pro had “K-11” listed as a rumored project for Stewart, referencing her role as that of autistic transgender prison inmate Butterfly. Not only has IMDB Pro removed this listing from Stewart’s profile in recent weeks—it has kept listings of other rumored cast, such as Goran Visnjic and D.B. Sweeney.

Another indicator: actor-targeted computer app, Actsophia, posted a casting call announcement on its Facebook page on June 1st, announcing that “Pam Dixon is casting “K-11”” and mentioning role descriptions including this one: “BUTTERFLY 19 Redhead Tiny Beauty”.

In terms of Stewart’s production schedule, “Snow White and the Huntsman” is slated to begin shooting in September. Stewart is also listed for a role in “Backwoods”, a short that is also slated to be played by Julianne Moore. “K-11” was originally slated to begin filming in June or July, yet concrete cast details remain nonexistent.

Also casting doubt on Stewart’s intention to act in the film is the fact that her role as Butterfly was rarely (if ever) discussed by Stewart herself. It was mostly discussed by Stewart’s “Twilight” co-star Nikki Reed, who first commented in March 2009 to MTV News: “Kristen is playing a boy, and I am playing a man who is quite a few years older than she is. I am working more on my accent.” Reed since announced her departure from the project in April 2010.

As much as you might look forward to seeing Kristen Stewart tackle K-11, it'll be a while, according to Gossip Cop.

Apparently, the film, which will co-star Stewart's Twilight series foe Nikki Reed and which will be directed by Stewart's mother Jules Mann-Stewart, is still a forthcoming project, but it won't be shooting in January - or any "imminent" time period for that matter.

While Kristen Stewart's line-up for next year is pretty relaxed, it seems that there are a few obstacles in the way of approaching production on this project for now.

HOLLYWOOD — In late 2008, it was hard to find two hotter Hollywood talents than Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed. The co-stars and real-life best friends had just taken over Hollywood with the surprising success of "Twilight," had "New Moon" and other sequels on the way and were being courted by producers all over Hollywood. But rather than sign up for some generic teen-road-trip movie or romantic comedy, the duo chose to reunite ... in a fact-based drama/comedy that would have them playing men?

It was called "K-11," and from the moment of its inception it became one of the stranger projects being developed in the business — particularly because it seemed like such a daring choice for Stewart and Reed. KStew was slated to portray a male-to-female transsexual prisoner with autism, while Reed would play a fellow inmate who was transgender and addicted to meth. When we caught up with the girls at the "Twilight" premiere in November '08, it was full steam ahead — so, what happened?

"Yeah," was Kristen's response when we brought up the project to her recently, asking if she still thought the film would get made. "Totally.

"It's just one of those things where you try and get a movie off the ground that's small," added the actress, whose love for indie cinema is on display once again with "The Runaways" this week, which follows on the heels of everything from "The Yellow Handkerchief," "Adventureland," "The Cake Eaters" and other independently financed, outside-the-box films.

The movie was to mark the directorial debut of Kristen's mother, Jules Stewart. Reed was looking forward to sinking her teeth into the role of Mousey, a 30-year-old man covered in tattoos and a three-day growth. Based on a real dormitory in the L.A. County jail and co-starring Jason Mewes, "K-11" was a comedy/drama that would depict the unusual family dynamic of the prison.

But, despite the fact that it is nearly impossible to find any actress in Hollywood more desirable than Kristen Stewart these days, she revealed to us that "K-11" is still having a hard time securing financing.

"I don't know [whether it will get made]," she explained. "Like, right now it's harder [to get indie films made]."

Due to the economy and the general marketplace for independently made, experimental productions, Stewart's sentiment is one often echoed by filmmakers.

"It just never got legs," Stewart said of the flick, insisting that she's still holding out hope. "I still really hope to do it."
