Jules Stewart interview with Mingle Media TV
Experience. Passion for Storytelling.
For the past 25 + years Jules Stewart has worked in TV and Movies as a script supervisor, representing the writers on set, sitting next to directors and DPs (director of photography) taking notes and ensuring the continuity of the project is sound.
For K-11, she moves over a chair to the director’s seat and brings the story to life. Stewart co-wrote K-11 with Jared Kurt who came to her with six pages and this story idea. The collaboration began with research and understanding the “real” place this film would be set in. There were no hidden agendas, no political statements, just telling a story.
That’s where many projects get de-railed.
Too many times the script or story starts out with one voice and vision, but not K-11, it was not designed by committee where others start injecting their voice and before you know it, your story is no longer yours. Stewart told me that she had the movie funded three times but two of them fell through. It wasn’t until meeting with some investors from France that she found the right partners. Their only requirement was that she stay as close to the script as possible.
Add up her experience and her artistic bent and you’ll understand why it was only natural for her to make the jump to be in full control as a director.
During our conversation, Stewart shared that she had some very good teachers. In fact, if you look at her IMDb credits, you’ll see some very impressive projects from dramas to action to comedies and family films proving that she’s had the “on the job training” to be a successful director as she’s worked with some very accomplished filmmakers over the years.
Shot in Continuity Order.
What does that mean? Most film or TV projects are shot out-of-order because you may only need to be at one location for a day with two or three actors so it makes sense to group them together and shoot the scenes out-of-order to keep costs down. But K-11 was shot in twenty-two days in continuity order which is unusual. The benefits were that the cast knew where the story was going and could go with the flow of the scenes being shot. Plus most of the movie is set in a large room where 46 people had to work together to tell the story as directed by Stewart. As you watch the movie, you’ll see how the camera almost plays the role of one of the inmates and you’re seeing their POV (point of view) as the story unravels.
There is a story within a story here. One where Goran Visnjic’s character Ray Saxx, a very successful record producer gets put in jail for a “187″ (murder) but is so strung out on drugs that he doesn’t know where he is. That’s when D.B. Sweeney’s character LT. Gerald Johnson, a shady sheriff’s deputy, jumps in to take him to his special ward inside of the LA County Jail, the one designated for gay and transgendered male prisoners, K-11.
Once in K-11, the audience sees life behind bars, not good or bad, just a slice of life during the time that “Ray Saxx” is inside. There is truth to this side of the film as Stewart and Kurt’s story shows the inmates as they go about their business, from “Mousey,” expertly played by Kate del Castillo, who runs the ward to “Butterfly” played by Portia Doubleday (who also delivers a stellar performance) a delicate character who morphs as the world around “her” (sorry, not into spoilers)…
Raw. Real. Not Heavy.
When I started watching the screener, it was on my second computer and as usual I was “working” on my other one when I had to stop, rewind, and just sit back and be in the audience. At first, you’re startled by the realistic setting, reminding me of “scared straight” episodes where it’s raw and real and you wanted to get out of there. Then you are pulled in and follow the “camera” to watch the events unfold. Personally, this movie had me feeling a range of emotions from relief, (that feeling of never being in that situation and thank god it has never happened to me) to frustration, to fear, to satisfaction. It started dark but left you light at the end. Unburdened, if you will, but still haunted by the situation that won’t change.
As much as I’d like to say this movie is for everyone, it’s not. It wasn’t meant to be for everyone. That’s okay with Stewart. She just wanted to tell a story, no hidden agenda. Is it a good story? Yes, it is. The movie delivers the vision and voice of the story. When you put time into creating a story and then tell it your way, and are pleased with your work, that’s all that matters. Remember the saying “art is subjective” and keep an open mind and just listen to the story.
K-11 is directed and co-written by Jules Stewart with Jared Kurt co-writing and stars Goran Visnjic (Red Widow, Beginners, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur), Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt), D.B. Sweeney (Hard Ball), Jason Mewes (Clerks), Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister (The Dark Knight), Tara Buck (True Blood; Justified) and Cameron Stewart in his feature film debut.

In a recent interview Kate del Castillo says “I play a transexual and she is bad ass!” In another interview she stated “I’m playing a transgendered [person] and that was very challenging, and that’s what I want. To be in projects that are interesting to me and [where] I will learn from the character.”
Actor and RAL’s Jovanny Venegas said “I had a great time working on K-11. Awesome director, cast, crew everyone was great including the ghosts. (Laughs) No seriously, the prison was really haunted! We were shooting in a real life prison which has been closed for many years. We shot for many weeks and sometimes 12-13 hour days…. I had some time to explore, there was this one specific ward – I believe it was the psych ward were I really got a strong supernatural feeling. You can just feel it, it was intense! There was even a time I got so scared that I ran out screaming like a little girl. I actually have video of it.”

Larry Richman writes about K-11
In a landscape increasingly filled with gritty independent films, here’s one that’s been hotly awaited. K-11 is a drama is set in a special lockup for gay and transgender prisoners in the Los Angeles County prison system. The “K-11″ unit is one place where the proverbial soap drop might take you one step further.
K-11 is the auspicious directorial debut for Jules Stewart, a veteran script supervisor, shooting from her own script. The cast is chock full of recognizable faces, including Goran Visnjic (Beginners, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur), Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt), D.B. Sweeney (Hard Ball), Jason Mewes (Clerks), Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister (The Dark Knight), Tara Buck (True Blood, Justified), and Jules’ son Cameron Stewart. Daughter Kristen has a cameo, as well.

Kate del Castillo talks about her role in K-11 (AP)
Kate gives life to a transgender prisoner in her next movie. But far
from worrying about critiques, the Mexican actress, who has played as
an exotic dancer and even a drug trafficker in other films, said that
her new role has helped her grow professionally.
"It was one of those opportunities that you get once in a life time."
said the star of Television and Cinema to The Associated Press. It was
a big challenge, it was a risk but i like it that it a character that
is going to cause a reaction." "If not what is the point?"
Del Castillo gives life to Julio "Mousey" Ruiz in "K-11", Section in a
Los Angeles prison that houses homosexuals, lesbians, transsexuals and
transgender. Mousey is the killer in the special unit in which record
producer, Raymond Saxx Jr. (Goran Visnjic) gets thrown into. He will
have to learn to endure the power of K-11 to survive.
With scarce clothing, long painted eyebrows, her hair disheveled and
tattoos on the chest, forearms and navel, the actress has a
threatening and androgynous look in the film.
"She's basically the queen of K-11, she's a woman, a transsexual that
hasn't gotten all the operations and that has a special bond with the
lead. She is a woman filled with psychological traumas but with an
incredible security, she's a drug addict and violent but you learn to
love her," explained Del Castillo about her character.
The film also includes scenes with violence, drugs and rapes, "all the
normal things," that happen in jail cells according to the film
director, Jules Stewart.
"I didn't have to try to make the film controversial but it has all
those elements," explained the film maker (mother of Twilight actress,
Kristen Stewart.)
Therefore the actress who defied the boundaries of censorship in the
series "La Reina del Sur- The Queen of the South" by kissing another
actress in a scene, dismissed the criticism ahead of time that "K-11"
may cause, to emphasize that her role was only a big challenge, a job
that any actress would like be able to interpret.
"I really appreciate this role because not many actresses have had
this opportunity." said the star of 'Bajo la misma Luna' and 'Tarde,'
"What people say is just criticism spurred from so much ignorance, who
just want to see the negative when one is trying to pursue a career."
To give life to Mousey, the actress had to start from scratch, not
knowing much about transgender people in prison.
"Before the film I was not connected with the transsexual. I got a
consultant, Felicity Huffman from " Transamerica, " who introduced me
to that world. I read every book I could and watched all the movies I
could, and looked for information online to see that which is like a
faraway world to us, on which there is much ignorance, "she said.
Her performance left the director happy and satisfied who said she was
extremely talented.
"Kate was the first actress I hired. I saw her on TV and saw that she
is an incredible actress and versatile," said Stewart, who directed
her first film. "In 'K-11' "She not only dominates the unit but also the film."
The film was completed last year and is in process of distribution.
Portia Doubleday and Tara Buck also play as transgendered inmates.

K-11 featured with new movie still in Total Film (UK)
K-11, the directorial debut of Jules Stewart, is due out in the US later this year, and we’ve got an exclusive image for you.
Stewart, previously a script supervisor (and, yes, the mother of Twilight’s Kristen Stewart), makes her writing and directing debut with this one, and the subject matter doesn't exactly flinch from potential controversy.
The film stars Goran Visnjic as a record producer who winds up in prison after a drugs binge. Although he doesn’t end up in a standard cell: he’s put into the ‘K-11 unit’ for gay and transgendered inmates.
The film is fictional, although the K-11 unit does exist in the L.A. County Men’s Jail.
Visnjic has been on a strong run of late, providing solid support in Beginners and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. We’re keen to see what he does with another lead role.
Here’s the official synopsis in full:
"K-11 is a riveting drama that deals with the politics of race and gender-identity in the Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail.
"The film follows Raymond Saxx Jr. (Goran Visnjic), a powerful record producer who wakes from a drug-induced blackout to find himself locked up and classified "K-11." Plunged into a nightmarish world ruled by a transsexual diva named Mousey (Kate del Castillo), Raymond is truly a fish out of water. Complicating matters are a troubled young transgender named Butterfly (Portia Doubleday), a predatory child molester (Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister) and the ruthless Sheriff’s Deputy, Lt. Johnson (D.B. Sweeney).
"Ray’s struggle to contact the outside world and regain his freedom seems impossible, but he must learn to navigate this new power structure if he is ever going survive and be in control of his life again."
K-11 is expected to open later this year.

An introduction to Tara Buck & her character, Crystal, in K-11
Crystal: I'm a junkie with a rap sheet a mile long, mostly minor offenses but in Cali we have this fu*@# up three strikes law. Drugs mostly, but some BS prostitution charges too. I was born a boy but I'm hella foxy and I aint about to let this hot ass go to waste. That's probably where the trouble started. Honestly I'd rather be in K-11 than on the outside, so for me it's home. Mousey's my girl but when she aint looking you can be sure that I'm gonna get mine.
Tara: I grew up in Idaho mostly, one of two children raised by a single Mom. I spent most of my childhood entertaining myself. We didn't have a television so I created my own stories and spent days lost in my imagination. I rode horses, played in mountain creeks and constantly had skinned knees and a sunburned nose. I moved to Los Angeles immediately after graduating from high school to pursue acting at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Shortly after graduating I landed my first recurring television role on the hit series Party of Five. I've been in Los Angeles chasing the dream ever sense.I gravitate to roles where I get to bring a voice to the underdogs in life, whose stories are less often told. I enjoy the transformative leap into a character and the freedom that gives me to indulge my imagination. Working on K-11 was a delightfully twisted diversion from my day to day life and I hope that audiences will enjoy a similar escape when they go to see it.
Tara is best known for her recurring role as the epic screaming barmaid “Ginger” in HBO’s True Blood. Tara has also guest starred in numerous other television shows including Nip/Tuck, Bones, Southland, Justified, Cold Case, The Closer, The Shield, The X-Files, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Without a Trace, Navy NCIS and most recently NBC's Prime Suspect. Tara also just wrapped production on the indie film Boot Tracks starring alongside Stephen Dorff, Michelle Monaghan and Willem Dafoe.
