New interview with K-11's Ralph Cole Jr (POPgoesTheWeek)

Ralph Cole Jr. stars in K-11, a film written and directed by Kristen Stewart’s mother, Jules Stewart. Acting in a movie with ER‘s Goran Visnjic, as the character Kay-Kay, was a big step for Cole, who previously built up his credits on TV shows like Harry’s Law, Two and a Half Men, The Chris Rock Show and Desperate Housewives.

The theme of “K-11″ is really unique and almost sucks someone in. With the film being about jail, have you ever felt “jailed” in your life and what did you do to escape your metaphorical “prison” to happiness, either personally or in your career choices?

What a terrific question! Metaphorically, I felt jailed when I tried to be what I thought casting directors wanted me to be..which is impossible. Once I was myself, I was free!

You said in a previous interview that your favorite acting gigs are sitcoms. Do you do anything special preparing yourself for humor?

I excavate every possible nuance the writers have given me to present the funniest scenarios possible.

What would you do differently if you were in a sketch comedy show that changed the script up to the last minute like “Saturday Night Live?”

Like sketch comedy, sitcom dialogue can often change up to the last minute. In my experience, my approach stays the same…remain flexible so as to absorb your updated dialogue with ease.

As someone who won an NAACP Award himself, you know best of all that we can’t pretend racial issues don’t exist in entertainment. We still don’t have movies opening like crazy where we see tons of racial diversity in romantic comedies. As much as I love Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, etc., we could think of the other hand: how might those same movies perform if we had an African-American actor in the lead roles?

Have you ever encountered any negative situations based on your race? How did you look past these bad events to move on to better things?

It remains disheartening that racial issues exist anywhere. As for my work in the entertainment industry, I feel fortunate to not have experienced negative situations based on being Negro. If for some reason I have not booked a role because of the color of my skin, I am pleased to be unaware because I always move onward and upward to better things.

Regarding incredible African-American performers and actors, who are your favorites?

Wow, another delicious question! Growing up, I thought Mom’s Mabley was hilarious. Scatman Crothers, Alfre Woodard, Sidney Poitier, Michael Jackson, CCH Pounder, Morgan Freeman, Viola Davis, Angela Bassett. Also, while not on a stage necessarily, but a “performer” all the same, Harriet Tubman. There are so many fierce Negroes!

If you could have a sitcom created just for you similar to any previous one, done your way, which show would you rely on for inspiration?

“I Love Lucy!”

With web radio, you either love hosting or hate it. I tried it and felt I was all wrong for it because I cannot be myself when I see myself talking into a telephone. I feel as if I am talking TO the telephone, haha. So with you, clearly, you are successful with your Universal Broadcasting Network program and have a natural knack for doing it. What do you love about it and what are your secrets to making audio work for you when we as a society are so accustomed to needing visuals whether we are in the audience or the people being heard or seen?

Here is the secret revealed: I love to talk. I love to talk to friends on the telephone. I love talking to Planet Eartha with the click of a button from our UBN studio! For those who need visuals, we can be live streamed as well.

If you had to interview yourself, asking yourself something you may feel is very deep, touching a tough spot as your hardest ever question for your gig as a radio journalist, what would you ask yourself? Would you be willing to give the answer to your own question…to yourself? And what might you say?

Do you think your effeminacy has prevented you from booking roles?

Absolutely. Our society is not tolerant of the effeminate male but as part of this society I am worthy of every possible opportunity. And as I stated earlier, once I was myself in all facets of my life, I was free. And that freedom has led to me being a veteran industry participant.

Who are your favorite people you have had on your show, and your favorite moments?

On the Set with Jasper Cole is a tremendously listened to radio show. My first and foremost favorite person has been Jasper himself. Our favorite moments are derived from us laughing with wild abandon. That happens every show. Denise Boutte, Alicia Minshew, Suze Lanier-Bramlett, Jennifer Bassey, Leslie Jordan, Carolyn Hennesy, Leon Acord, Cerris Morgan-Moyer, Lisa Ann Walter, Carlease Burke, Damien Haas, Ronnie Butler, Jillian Rose Reed, Tony Sweet, Marty Shannon, Jeffrey Patrick Olson, Norma Micheals, Shanica Knowles, Jason Boegh, Sally Kirkland, Galen Gering, Corbin Bleu, Jared Allman, Elaine Hendrix, Olivia Summers, Matt Fahey, D.J. Shangela Pierce, Diana DeGarmo, Ace Young, Stephen Grove Malloy, Freda Payne, Jeffrey Sumner, Rib Hillis, David Pevsner, Jennifer Gimenez, Ann Walter, Chad Darnell, Jon Huertas, Robert Hensley, Jason Stuart, Versa Manos, Dylan Hyde, Morgan Giesler, Valarie Pettiford, Bill Oberst Jr., Markus Redmond, Efren Ramirez, Stephen Foster, Dara Zane Scully, and Bruce Vilanch are a few of our guests that have added to the popularity and hilarity!

How do you think good comedy can lead to being a powerful dramatic actor?

Good comedy allows you broad strokes. Powerful drama is more subtle and refined. Being able to harness and sculpt a dramatic performance from your comic options is a terrific journey.

K-11 featured with new movie still in Total Film (UK)

K-11, the directorial debut of Jules Stewart, is due out in the US later this year, and we’ve got an exclusive image for you.

Stewart, previously a script supervisor (and, yes, the mother of Twilight’s Kristen Stewart), makes her writing and directing debut with this one, and the subject matter doesn't exactly flinch from potential controversy.

The film stars Goran Visnjic as a record producer who winds up in prison after a drugs binge. Although he doesn’t end up in a standard cell: he’s put into the ‘K-11 unit’ for gay and transgendered inmates.

The film is fictional, although the K-11 unit does exist in the L.A. County Men’s Jail.

Visnjic has been on a strong run of late, providing solid support in Beginners and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. We’re keen to see what he does with another lead role.

Here’s the official synopsis in full:

"K-11 is a riveting drama that deals with the politics of race and gender-identity in the Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail.

"The film follows Raymond Saxx Jr. (Goran Visnjic), a powerful record producer who wakes from a drug-induced blackout to find himself locked up and classified "K-11." Plunged into a nightmarish world ruled by a transsexual diva named Mousey (Kate del Castillo), Raymond is truly a fish out of water. Complicating matters are a troubled young transgender named Butterfly (Portia Doubleday), a predatory child molester (Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister) and the ruthless Sheriff’s Deputy, Lt. Johnson (D.B. Sweeney).

"Ray’s struggle to contact the outside world and regain his freedom seems impossible, but he must learn to navigate this new power structure if he is ever going survive and be in control of his life again."

K-11 is expected to open later this year.

An introduction to Ralph Cole Jnr & his character Kay-Kay

Kay-Kay:  To look at me you would not take me for an Edwin Ahlbrandt...but that's my birth name. Yuck! So I go by Kay-Kay. I am fierce. The system calls it "prostitution", I call it being a people person. They call it "possession", I call it having a few party favors. Anyway, it all led to K-11. But I am not here for life. Please know I am not like these other long time losers. I have a trade. Oh, but yes I do. I am a stylist. I do hair and eyebrows. I am clearly something to look at and be aware of. Because of my talents, I am respected and left alone. Mousey rules the joint and that's fine cause these bitches can be ruffff! And now that I am all teamed up with Hollywood...I am a celebrity stylist. So, learn it.

Ralph Cole, Jr.: I was born to perform. As an only child I thrived on make believe and vivid imagination. It started in Los Angeles, then New York City for twenty years and now back home! Living on both coasts profoundly shaped my experience and approach to acting. I am energetic and enjoy using my phenomenal comic timing. With life experience comes tremendous memories which facilitate creating darker roles. I was raised by two supportive parents which has resulted in my boundless zest for life and instilled confidence. Combined, this makes my acting journey palatable and rewarding.

Ralph received both the prestigious NAACP Theater Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Pasadena Playhouse's FRED Award for his creation of the plum role "Babaloo" in Larry Hart's Sisterella produced by Robert DeNiro and the late, great Michael Jackson. Network TV like Desperate Housewives and Two and a Half Men coupled with film appearances in The Soloist and Eating Out: The Open Weekend, round out his credits.

As you know we always “Take you to the Hottest & Most Exclusive Locations!” And today, R.A.L. is exclusively taking you behind the scenes of “K-11″ which is going to be one of the Hottest movies of 2012!

K-11 is directed by Jules Stewart, who is making her feature directorial debut. Does the last name Stewart ring a bell? Well it should, Jules is the mother of Twilight star Kristen Stewart. Kristen was originally casted in the project, but unfortunately was not able to participate due to prior obligations. But her brother Cameron Stewart, will be playing a jail inmate named Sledgehammer.

Now you may ask how did we get this exclusive? Well it turns out that R.A.L Correspondent / Actor Jovanny Venegas, happens to play a K-11 inmate. He will be sharing his on set experience.

Jovanny says “This is going to be one of those movies, that you will always remember, just imagine we were shooting in a real-life haunted prison, and the movie tells the story of all of the crazy things that really happened in a section of the Los Angeles County Jail, that one never hears about.” Jovanny continues with “It’s real life, nothing fake about K-11. And I will be taking our R.A.L readers on a wild journey, till the movie is released.”

Looking forward to some more updates from Jovanny. :)

Ralph Cole Jr talks to XI Magazine about K-11

However, don’t think this superstar in the making is relegating himself to the world of comedy.  He recently wrapped a role in director Jules Stewart‘s prison drama, “K-11,” which marks a significant departure from his trademark funnyman persona.  Amidst a hectic schedule, he spoke with me regarding his thoughts on the entertainment industry, his dream role and his new role.

XI: What’s next for you?

I’m featured in this great new film called “K-11″ directed by Jules Stewart.  Hopefully it will be going to the 2012 Berlin Film Festival and we’ll have a domestic release later that year.  It’s a very gritty prison story.   As a comedian, it’s always great to play drama; I always immerse myself in it when I get a chance to.  We shot at a prison so everything was so realistic.  Playing a prisoner was so eye-opening.  I’m a passionate actor so, whatever I do, I go full-out and do it.

I’m also featured in another great film called “Eating Out: The Open Weekend” which just made its premiere in Palm Springs and will be coming to DVD in 2012 and also will air on the Logo network in July 2012.  Weekly, I co-host a radio show with Jasper Cole called “On The Set with Jasper Cole” and we interview celebrity guests from all aspects of entertainment.

This was definitely one of my most memorable interviews in almost 3 years of doing this.  Ralph is effervescent, realistic and a real hoot…paging television executives, this man would be great on ANY show!  Make sure you follow Ralph on Twitter (@Ralphcolejr).

For the great full interview with Ralph go here at the source ximagonline.

via @KstewAngel thank you for the tip.

K-11 Movie Fan Site side note: The mention of the Berlin Film Festival is exciting.
